Introduction
Utila’s disaster recovery solutions are designed to ensure customers can access their assets in the unlikely event of a non-recoverable incident. This capability, commonly referred to as Vault Backup, offers multiple implementation options, all based on the same core principles:
Vault-scoped backup: Backups are created at the vault level.
Encrypted key export: Both key shares (e.g., ECDSA, EdDSA) for each wallet in the vault are encrypted and made available for export. This export is known as the encrypted vault backup or recovery package.
Independent access: The customer, or a designated partner, retains the ability to decrypt and access the key shares. This ensures that assets remain accessible without requiring any further involvement from Utila.
Secure governance: Creating a recovery package requires admin quorum approval and is further protected by cryptographic signing of the encryption key. This ensures that only authorized users can generate a valid recovery package.
Supported Disaster Recovery Methods
While we strongly recommend using one of Utila’s native integrations with a disaster recovery provider, advanced customers may choose to self-manage their recovery packages. See Introduction to self-managed backup of vault keys for details.
