Introduction to self-managed backup of vault keys

Back up your vault's private key

Updated over 3 weeks ago

The vault keys backup process ensures that the Utila's key share of your vault’s full private key is not only dependent on Utila’s cloud. The principle is that by holding the full key, consisting of both cloud and device key shares, you have full control of your vault's full private key if you need to recover your assets from your Utila Vault.

We recommend that you set up and test on a non-production vault.

Utila allows you to run vault keys recovery tests in a test vault. The test has the same steps as the production vault keys recovery process. However, it allows you to familiarize yourself with the process without exposing your production keys to unnecessary risk. This enables you to formulate internal processes as part of your business continuity and disaster recovery plan.

Ask Utila for a temporary quota increase to enable an additional limited vault for testing this process.

Because the self-managed process is quite technical, you can securely back up your vault keys using a third-party, such as Station70. Station70 generates and stores the private key needed to decrypt your MPC key shares, while you upload the corresponding public key to Utila.

For the self-managed process, see the Guide to self-managed backup guide.
