Utila's backup and recovery solution ensures access to your assets in the unlikely event that Utila's core infrastructure is impacted by an unrecoverable disaster, or you lose access to your signing devices.
As a non-custodial solution, Utila never holds the client's entire key. Under Utila's MPC protocol, there are two key shares that are stored in two separate physical locations, one key share is stored on the cloud service managed by Utila, and its corresponding key share is stored on the mobile device used for signing transactions.
Backups
Vault key backup. Back up your vault’s key material using Utila’s native integrations with leading backup and recovery vendors, such as Station70 and Coincover. This allows you to generate your private keys in the event of a non-recoverable disaster to either Utila, or the core infrastructure it relies on.[add link]
Self-managed backup of vault keys. For more technically advanced users, self-manage your vault’s key material.
Export wallet data. You should periodically export your vault wallet data from your Utila vault to more easily map between your vault accounts and their private keys in the event of a recovery.
Recovery
Recover vault keys. Vault key recovery involves accessing the entire private key material of your vault, decrypting the encrypted backup files, and recovering the full key. From there, you can load the keys into third party wallets or sign transfers.
